Sustainability

Sustainable food practice is the ability to provide for the needs of the world’s current population without damaging the ability of future generations to provide for themselves.

When a process is sustainable, it can be carried out over and over without negative environmental effects or impossible high costs to anyone involved. The essence of this concept is looking at the long term impact of our actions with dealing with our short term needs. In short, sustainable food practices should meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The following actions are what the team at Piccalilli does on a daily basis to ensure they are a proudly sustainable business:

  1. Provide vegetarian options which reduces the use of animal products
  2. Prioritise organically produced foods – Piccalilli uses Barambah Organic Milk and wraps from Old Time Bakery
  3. Use organically produced meats
  4. Use organically produced dairy products – Barambah Milk
  5. Use free range eggs – Piccalilli uses Knotsbury Farm Eggs, a certified free range farm
  6. Use local and seasonal produce
  7. Use fair trade – socially and environmentally preferable
  8. Encourage use of tap water in preference to bottled water
  9. Minimise wastage
  10. Provide recycling facilities
  11. Piccalilli keeps fruit and vegetable peelings separate and take them away daily for composting
